Some of this was sort of inspired off of a dream I had about some sky islands which was probably due to me marathoning Steven Universe, and playing a lot of Skyward Sword. Also I stare at the sky a lot at night. The ideas I got at first for this project were related to the sky, forest, and sea. In the end I tried to combine the ideas of the sky and sea, which brings us to this weird sky civilization that lives in colorful houses on floating chunks of rock (or giant sky whales), travels by sail boats (or giant sky whales), and make friends with the sky fish (or giant sky whales) that live with them.
During the project I kind of goofed off a bit and imagined that there would be a giant sky whale some weird old man built his house on for some reason, but no one really questions it.
I wanted the timing to take place in the evening/night when you can see the stars and planets, but it'd still be bright enough to see and there would be colors in the sky. I put in a lighthouse as well so then the ships could navigate themselves at night. I also thought about putting in some eels and scary-looking fish to try and give the place a sense of adventure.
For this project I used mainly watercolors, I didn't have any acrylic paint and I would get impatient and sloppy if I used only color pencils. Watercolors were a lot more fun to use and it came out a lot better. I did use some color pencils in order to highlight some of the colors and enhance them a bit. In this project I tried to align the perspective with the islands, sailboats, clouds, etc. Some clouds may overlap islands, some islands look a bit more distant along with the sailboats, and you can even see a bit of the surface of the earth through a crack in the clouds.
