concentration: weird dreams
Concentration 1dougs | Digital Originally a piece where I turned into a werewolf on a cruise ship and it started flooding, changed it to three dogs arguing behind a drug store at 3AM about which human snacks are better, because it was a much better dream conceptually. Digital, experimenting with brushes, etc. I really like the fur on the black dog, the texture is really good and I'm super proud of it. I called this piece Dougs because I was desperate for a title and sometimes I say dougs as a funny way of saying dogs. I know it's not a good title, but I was desperate and I had to give it a title for the art show. Look, I had like 10 minutes to come up with a title for 24 pieces, I never said I made good decisions. |
CONCENTRATION 2
dragon | Digital Very experimental piece with brushes and other settings, not my best one and I want to work on it a little more. There was this movie theater inside of a cave on top of this hill, when the movie ended we went back to our cars, this dragon came down out of nowhere and started trying to attack the cars. I wish I had more time to work on it, I'd fix the weird lighting on the hood of the car and the horns, and the weird shaped nails, and give the grass a little more orange, add a better background that actually showed the sky a little. |
CONCENTRATION 3
who's kid is this | Digital There were these aliens that would adopt human children if they were found abandoned in space or in rocket shipwrecks, they'd raise them and then give them jobs piloting space ships when they're old enough. I kind of like this piece, like the stars, the planet, and the lighting, but I wish I had more time to touch up the alien itself, like those hands are garbage but I didn't have time to fix them, and some more values, there's virtually no lighting from that planet and it's killing me. |
concentration 4
salamander rave in the desert | Acrylic paint on canvas A small snippet of some dream I had, I just remember these axolotls eating fireflies and flying around these huge cactus trees that were flowering with all these different flowers. I want to work on this piece more because I didn't have time to actually add detail to the background, and there's only a base for a few of the flowers, I need to finish up a lot on this piece. Also that bottom axolotl needs some work. |
concentration 5
golden | Acrylic paint on matboard This piece is a mix of two dreams, one where the moon got really close to the earth and started making it rain a lot, to the point where everything was really marshy, and one where there were these puddles that bubbled and hovered above the ground in my backyard, in this dream, goldfish would tend to gather around these puddles for some reason. I decided to mix these two dreams together into one piece because they had sort of a similar cloudy and somewhat supernatural atmosphere. I decided to call it Golden because I was desperate for a title, again, and I had no other ideas, so I was like "Yeah, I'll call it Golden, it sounds fake deep and pretentious in every way. And there's goldfish so it sort of works. I have no other ideas." |
concentration 6
romantic walk in the woods with bigfoot | Acrylic on matboard This was another snippet of a dream I had where I met Bigfoot in the woods. There wasn't actually anything romantic about the dream I just thought that would be a funny title. I wanted to do this dream because I wanted to practice painting foliage using references from the creek behind my house, and the birds I'd see in there. This piece was actually a lot of fun to make and I'm really proud of it. |
concentration 7
chicken | Acrylic paint, prismacolor pencil, on canvas paper A dream I had in 1st grade where a giant alien chicken from space took over the sky and my neighborhood, it just stomped around the street, and turned the sky from day to night repeatedly like it was flickering a light switch on and off. For some reason this dream has haunted me for 12 years and I haven't trusted a chicken since. |
concentration 8
astral projecting through mema's floor | Acrylic paint on matboard I had this dream when I was really little, maybe when I was four or something. I was at my mema's(grandma) house and I was climbing on one of her computer chairs, I fell off of it and floated down into my backyard, this piece is what I saw when I was floating down at that moment, the azaleas were out and it was really pretty. Then I climbed up this huge bush of azaleas that didn't even exist in real life, and when I got to the top I jumped and as I fell it was like I was slowly astral projecting out of the dream and back into my normal body, then I woke up, it was really weird. |
concentration 9
stink eye | Watercolor on watercolor paper This one wasn't actually a dream, I was running out of time and I needed another piece in my concentration so I added this one because I really like it and I liked making this piece a lot. It's of a hawk that was hanging out in a tree in my backyard, right by my window. I never saw it so up close before and I thought it was really cool! We actually had a guest artist come in and teach us this new watercolor pouring technique, which was super fun and I might want to try it again in the future. |
concentration 10
I'm about to get jumped by twenty frogs | Acrylic paint, watercolor, and prismacolor pencil on watercolor paper Another snippet from a dream I had where I was following this tunnel, and ended up in this cave that was absolutely filled with frogs, they just looked at me and their eyes were glowing like cat eyes do sometimes, it was really weird. I really like this one, I like the colors, lighting and the texture of the rocks a lot. I want to add some stuff though, nothing too crazy, a couple more frogs, a little bit of foliage between the rocks, stuff like that. |
concentration 11
I'm hungry | Acrylic paint on canvas This is another snippet of a dream I had, I was walking around in the woods and there was this tree with really tasty looking fruit, but I was afraid of walking over there because I was wearing white shoes and I didn't want to stain them because my mom would kill me, so I just stared at it because I thought it was really pretty. I kind of like this piece but it still feels a little unfinished, I like the colors and values in the trees in the background and in the main tree itself. I'm just now beginning to realize that seeing this title out of context is actually pretty confusing but funny. |
concentration 12
3am adventure | Prismacolor pencils and acrylic paint on canvas I had this dream pretty recently, but in the dream I was around 13, we had moved into a new house with a lot of land surrounding it, and I woke up in the middle of the night around 1AM-5AM and couldn't go back sleep, which was a reoccurring problem I had as a kid for some reason. I decided to go outside and all this magic stuff came out of nowhere, it was almost like a different place. I was running around catching fairies that would give you weird things if you caught them, like compasses, and different colored fox tails tied together like a weird clown handkerchief, catching weird magic bugs, petting dragons that lived under the bridge in the river, and flying with birds. When it turned to be 6AM in the dream all of it just vanished, and I had to get ready for school, but I had this teacher at school that I would give these magic bugs to, she'd make them into coins that I could use in certain vending machines. It was almost like a weird video game side quest. |
